Changed My Mind About Guineas

Guinea pigs aren’t a type of pet that I would have considered buying in the past, but since we have got our two indoor pigs (not really my decision to get them in the first place by the way) I’ve grown to like them! I wanted to go through some of the reasons why I’ve changed my mind about guinea pigs in this article, hopefully it will help some of you to decide whether they are the right pets for you.

The main reason I didn’t want to get a guinea pig in the past is because I thought they would smell. Thankfully, that’s not the case. I think that guinea pigs often smell because they are kept in wooden cages which begin to soak in urine after a while, but that doesn’t happen with a plastic cage, so as long as you clean it out once a week there is no reason why a guinea pig cage should smell.

Another reason is that guinea pigs don’t seem to bite. I had hamsters when I was a kid, and they always used to bite, mainly because they got so scared. Guinea pigs are even easier to scare, but they don’t seem to want to bite you. The only time they may hurt is if they scratch, but that’s purely accidental (and probably your fault if you aren’t holding them properly).

Of course, it’s not a good idea to put your guineas on carpets, because they aren’t very easy to potty train (not that we’ve actually tried). They make good pets, and they haven’t had an “accident” on us yet, but they certainly won’t hesitate to go on the floor.

All in tall, I’m pleased we got some guinea pigs. They need to be kept in pairs which is why we bought two, but we’ll certainly be getting more in the future as long as nothing goes wrong!
